First Baptist Church Jacksonville ad coincidentally aired during TV show about gay couple

A commercial promoting a new sermon series at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, which objected to a recent city proposal to ban?discrimination against individuals based on sexual orientation, aired Tuesday night during the premier of a new NBC show about a gay couple.

But the timing of the commercial was coincidental, according to a church spokesman.

"We are placed on an ROS [run of site] schedule per station which is part of our contractual agreement. The station chooses the location of spots based on availability," said?Jeff Stoll, executive pastor of communications. "First Baptist Church isn't involved in the placement of ads."

In run of site advertising, advertisers generally give up say over placement in return for low rates and broad reach, according to marketingterms.com.

The new NBC show, The New Normal, is about?two gay Los Angeles men who have "a committed, loving partnership" and successful careers and the entry into their lives of a surrogate who agrees to have their child, according to the show website, nbc.com/the-new-normal/about. The show airs on WTLV TV-12.

The commercial promotes Senior Pastor Mac Brunson's sermon series, Unseen, which began Sept. 9. The series "discusses the unseen forces that shape our lives," Stoll said.

"This series deals with the the spiritual dimensions of life. It is in?the Spiritual realm that we have life and gain real power and strength.?The topics that pastor will cover include UnStuck, Underwater,?Undervalued, UnKnown, etc.," he said.
