Lebanese president says army should handle security in Tripoli

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said that the army should handle the security in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, which has repeatedly been the focus of sectarian conflict.

He called for "tasking the army with the mission of maintaining security in Tripoli without preconditions and without accusing it of being bias after every time it completes an assignment, especially because it has the full [support] of government," according to the National News Agency reported.

The president, who was speaking at a ceremony welcoming a Lebanese delegation to Greece, denounced the ongoing violence in his country, and asked: ?Does the [death] of a number of Lebanese from [Tripoli's]? Bab al-Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen save our brothers in Syria?"

"Let us protect our country and remain free and independent," said Suleiman.

Tripoli has repeatedly been the focus of sectarian conflict between pro- and anti-Syrian regime gunmen from Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, respectively.
