Art critic, historian, TV personality, small r-republican, and provacateur Robert Hughes passed away on Monday after a long illness. He was 74.
The Australian born Hughes came to America in 1970 after a sojourn in Europe to write for Time and quickly established himself as the world's foremost art critic. Despite his rugged appearance, Hughes was as equally comfortable writing and speaking about the art of Rome and Barcelona as he was about writing about the history of his native country.
Hughes attained notoriety in 1978 when he and Harold Hayes served as the first co-hosts of the ABC News program 20/20. Both Hughes and Hayes were sacked after a single week on the air and were replaced by Hugh Downs who remained with the program for more than 20 years.
Here's a 60 Minutes profile of Hughes done by Steve Kroft back in 1997.
