Assad sends condolences after Iran quake

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday sent a message of condolences to his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the deadly earthquake which struck his country's closest ally.

"On behalf of the Syrian people, President Assad expressed great sorrow for the victims of the two earthquakes and offered his condolences to the families of the victims and the Iranian people," state news agency SANA reported.

Two powerful earthquakes struck northwest Iran on Saturday, leaving 227 people dead and 1,380 injured, according to officials.
