Body found in hunt for missing woman oil executive

Police investigating the mysterious disappearance of an oil executive have found the body of a woman in a lock-up garage in London, Scotland Yard said on Friday.

Carole Waugh, 50, has not been seen by her family since she disappeared in mid-April. On Wednesday detectives said the probe into her disappearance had become a murder investigation.

The body, which was found in New Malden in southwest London on Thursday night, has not been formally identified. A post-mortem examination will take place on Friday.

The disappearance of Waugh, who had never gone missing before, was reported to police on May 7. Fears for her safety grew after a man tried to sell her central London flat by posing as her brother.

Detectives were also investigating whether Waugh, who had previously lived in Libya, worked as an escort after discovering that she met men through a variety of internet sites including dating websites.

Earlier this week, a 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap and conspiracy to defraud as he flew in to London via Luton Airport. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder.

To date, 10 people have been arrrested in connection with the investigation.

Detectives revealed on Wednesday that "significant plundering" of Waugh's estate has taken place since her disappearance.

Chief Inspector John McFarlane said on Wednesday: "We now believe that Carole has not been seen alive since April 16.

"Since that time, significant plundering of her estate has taken place to the value of hundreds of thousands of pounds. In addition to a number of fraudulent transactions associated with Carole's bank account, there are also a number of her personal possessions that currently cannot be located."

Among the missing items are a Cartier ring, a white gold bracelet, a yellow gold bracelet and a yellow gold necklace.
