An earthquake has struck around 90 km southeast of Rome, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The 4.8 magnitude quake struck at 10.16 pm local time and was felt from Rome to Naples and in the neighbouring region of Abruzzo, witnesses said.
The epicentre was near the towns of Sora and Isola del Liri.
AFP report that the tremors sparked panicked calls in the Abruzzo region to the emergency services.
According to Italian media reports, inhabitants in villages in the national park in Abruzzo raced out of their houses in panic.
