Military reacts to new U.S. role in Afghanistan

PLEASANT VALLEY, Wis. (WEAU) -- "We pray a lot and we have good support from family and friends," said Dan Hanson.

He and his wife, Gayla, are still getting used to a big change in their lives. Their son was always close by, but a few weeks ago he went a world away to Afghanistan, serving in the U.S. Army.

"Well it was right here at this kitchen table that he brought the information up to us," he said.

Dan and Gayla still remember the day Zachary said he wanted to join the military. They say there has been a lot of different emotions. But through it all, one still reigns supreme.

"Still extremely proud of his decision," Dan and Gayla echoed.

Both parents say they worry about him each day. They Facebook message and have been able to have a phone call.

And Friday, as President Obama announced plans to move to more of a supportive role in Afghanistan, Dan and Gayla watched, knowing it is a decision that directly impacts their family.

"We're glad to hear that, maybe in a selfish way, we wish it would have hapened a little sooner," Dan Hanson said.

They worry about their son's safety but take comfort in knowing how well troops are trained and the people that put their lives on the line for us each day, made the decisions themselves.

"And just to see how well prepared they are is comforting in some way too, and how commited they are," Hanson said.

They look forward to the day nine months from now when Zachary will return home. Holding on to hope, proud to see their son serving his country.
