Trail of Dead's Lively Return - Arts & Entertainment - The Suffolk Voice

Nearly twenty years of making music has lead band ?And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead to the recording and release of its eighth full-length studio album, Lost Songs, on October 22 of this year. According to band member Conrad Keely, the album is said to be inspired by ?the apathy to real world events that have plagued the independent music scene for over a decade, with influences such as Hildegard von Bingen, the Cure, Human League, KARP, Ros Seresotheya, and more.?

Lost Songs was recorded this past summer in Hanover, Germany. Chris ?Frenchie? Smith and Trail of Dead produced it under the labels Richter Scale and Superball Music. Band members consists of Conrad Keely (vocals, guitar, drums, piano), Jason Reece (Drums, vocals, guitar), Autry Fulbright II (bass and vocals), and Jamie Miller (drums and guitar). All members poured hard work and passion into this latest album, and their work has not gone unnoticed.

The eighth full-length album deals with a variety of different topics, from getting into the somewhat more political aspects, like the Syrian civil war, to Games of Thrones, to historical battles. But one of the most prominent and most influencing ideas seems to be the challenges of this generation. The song ?Awestruck? deals with just this; it is a cry and even a challenge for people to open their eyes to not just their local community, but a global one as well. Another song with a message to this generation is ?Catatonic,? which in its explanations, is said to be a ?portrait of an over privileged, dispassionate generation.? These topics successfully set a powerful message for the overall record.

The album is driven by these compelling messages and themes, but it would be nothing without the commanding music behind the lyrics. In the song ?Up To Infinity,? the fast drum beat and heavily layered guitar give these lyrics an aggressive feeling. The music is a variety of hardcore, progressive punk, and indie genres; the whole album is characterized by aggressive, in-your-face music and deserves nothing but a solid A on delivery.

Lost Songs has received praiseworthy reviews from many outlets, including Paste Magazine calling the album, ?in a word, intimidating,? and Filter Magazine writing, ?a welcome noise to these mandolin and Simon & Garfunkel-influenced days, Lost Songs is anything but: muscular songwriting, enviable melodies, ferocious playing, dazzling production.?
