Tech Skills You Need: How to Buy and Manage a Domain and How ...

How to buy a domainI recently posted a video that talked about how today you need to have tech skills to succeed. The video didn?t go into much detail on what specific tech skills you should have, so I thought I would list them for you. By all means I am not saying you need to be a master at these skills, you need to be a master at your music. But, having some basic understanding of these skills will go a long way in helping you further your career.

So lets get this listed started with the first tech skill you have understand.

The world, not just the music business, revolves around the internet. The domain name is the key to all of this. You should have a domain name for your band?s website. There are many places you can buy domains at, but I will discuss the one I use.

GoDaddy. Signup for a account at GoDaddy.com. It is very easy and fast to buy just a domain from them. BUT? do not get caught up in buying all the add-on features they will try to sell you. All you need is the domain name. Nothing else. Wherever you are hosting your website can provide everything else you need. We will discuss hosting in a upcoming post. Just know that where you host your website does not have to be at the same place you buy your domain. I buy my domains at GoDaddy and host my sites at Hostgator.com.

DNS stands for Domain Name Server. This in very simple terms is the address of where your domain should point to find your website. It is the address all servers on the internet will use to find your website. When you buy a domain by default the DNS is set to the domain companies servers. The company you host your website at will provide you with two DNS addresses for your server, NameServer 1 and NameServer 2, they would be in the format of:

ns####.hostgator.com
ns####.hostgator.com

Setting your DNS

When you get this from your hosting company upon signing up? SAVE IT! If you ever move your website or want to buy another domain to point to your site you will need this information.

In GoDaddy enter your Domain Manager and replace the values they have for DNS with your hosting companies DNS. Please note, it can take up to 24-48 hours for a change to take place. Though most of the time I have seen the change within a couple hours.

Changing the DNS is telling your domain to stop pointing to this server and point to this new server.

This is not something you are going to have to very often, but when you need to do it is good to understand what is happening.
