Sound Enrichment Therapy

Lots of people today feel anxiety from disturbances of their hearing mechanisms. These conditions include tinnitus and hyperacusis. they mistakenly believe that silence will help relieve their anxiety. The truth is that silence only makes their anxiety worse. What they actually need is to add proper types of sound into their environment.

First, a few definitions. Tinnitus refers to ringing in the ears. It represents a phantom auditory perception heard only by that individual, when no external source exists for the sound. Hyperacusis is a decreased tolerance for sounds, so that safe levels of sound are painful to the ears. Misophonia is sensitivity to specific sounds, wherein normal everyday sounds such as chewing, breathing, etc become offensive to the listener. Each of the above represents a disturbance of the auditory system. Such disturbances may exist in the ears, auditory nerves, or auditory centers of the brain.

The auditory system functions best when receiving sound. In the absence of external sound, individual ?hearing? cells become super sensitive. They listen so diligently for sound that they may pick up normal electromagnetic energy transfers from adjacent cells. This is thought to be the mechanism for tinnitus.

People with a reduced tolerance for sound often use ear plugs to block painful levels of noise. They may use them in situations such as a noisy theater, night club, crowded social gathering, or celebration with music. Sounds below 85 decibels will not damage anyone?s hearing and are considered safe. Blocking safe levels of sound actually makes hyperacusis worse, since the auditory cells become more sensitive in silent environments.

Individuals with misophonia typically experience anxiety from specific sounds associated with unpleasant memories. Introducing pleasing sounds to mask the offending sounds often prevents or relieves the anxiety that results. Energy psychology methods such as Anxiety relief Techniques(R) are highly effective for long term relief.

Adding the proper types of sound to your immediate environment can serve as effective therapy for these conditions. These added sounds must be continuous, not sporadic, and should be audible around the clock. This is especially important while you sleep in an otherwise silent room. Decide what sounds please you. Which ones relax you? These are the sounds that will work best for you.

In primitive times, humans could not survive on their own if isolated from others. So we evolved in groups, listening to others? conversations and noise making activities. This makes us feel safe. Conversely, silence often signaled danger. An advancing threat. This danger flooded our systems with adrenalin, the fear hormone. And this caused, and still causes, a feeling of anxiety.

The Sound of nature are particularly soothing for us. Sounds such as crickets chirping, water flowing, rain falling, wind in the trees. Some electronic generators mimic these sounds. Splashing water is marvelous to soothe and relax us. These sounds also provide a baseline stimulus to our hearing cells, enabling them to become less sensitive. these cells themselves -seem to relax and function much better in he presence of these sounds.
