By Andrew R. Johnson

As competition for borrowers heats up, simply offering credit-card customers the ability to earn cash back or points on purchases isn?t enough for banks. Many are trying to make their rewards programs easier to use by syncing them with social-media applications and other sites.

Citigroup today said it will allow members of its ThankYou Rewards program to pool their points through a new Facebook app. American Express lets consumers sync their credit cards with their Foursquare accounts.

American Express, J.P. Morgan and Discover Financial Services allow cardholders to link their accounts with Amazon.com and use rewards to pay for purchases on the site.
