SPECIAL TO THE AMERICAN PRESS

The third edition of the poetry and art exhibit Vision/Verse will open with a reception 6-9 p.m. Saturday, June 4, in the Art Associates Gallery on the second floor of the Central School Arts & Humanities Center, 809 Kirby St.
The poetry reading will be at 7 p.m. in the center?s second-floor theater.
The show brings together critically acclaimed and award-winning poets and artists from across the nation to produce corresponding pieces from each other?s work.
Initiated in 2009 by Yellow Flag Press, an independent publisher in Lake Charles that specializes in limited edition broadsides and chapbooks, Vision/Verse has become an annual endeavor to reinforce the bond between the literary and visual arts.
The exhibit will feature original artwork and uniquely designed broadsides, which are visual representations of poetry. The opening reception is the end to a six-month-long process in which 10 artists and 10 poets worked closely with an art form different from their own.
Each of the 10 artists selected one of the poets? poems and used that poem as the inspiration for a new piece of artwork. Simultaneously, each of the poets chose one of the artists? submitted pieces of art and used it as a springboard for a new poem.
Yellow Flag Press publishes and prints the poems as limited-edition broadsides and hangs them alongside their complementary pieces of inspiration. Prints of each broadside will be for sale during the opening reception.
Participating poets include the Louisiana Poet Laureate 2009-2011 Darrell Bourque and the Louisiana Poet Laureate 2011-2013 Julie Kane. Other poets include Ava Leavell Haymon, Stella Nesanovich, Rita D. Costello, William Lusk Coppage, Maya Beerbower, Tr?e George, Michael Shewmaker and Kolleen Carney.
Artists include Graham Austin, Allison Weeks Thomas, Chris Marcello, Lauren Brasher, Josh Guimbellot, Heather Ryan Kelley, Brendan Egan, Martin Castillo, Meghan Fleming and Tony Forrest.
