Since the early twentieth century careers have opened up for women. Now it is common for them to hold important posts in banking, politics and business. Successful women seldom whine or whinge about being disadvantaged. Most women who are involved in an ongoing career find it difficult to slow down when contemplating conception. Salaries have to be earned, and people who work for themselves know how very difficult it is to earn the money that is so easily spent. The stress of holding a job down is not conducive to fertility. Careers are more than employment. There was once a romantic relationship between an ambitious young woman and a rather foolish young man. The woman decided to end the relationship and pursue her professional goals abroad. However, an unplanned pregnancy forced her to change direction. She entered into an ill-matched marriage and the couple spent forty years unhappily but successfully raising three children. They divorced after forty years of marriage after the children had become independent. Their story is one of unplanned marriage and unfulfilled career goals.

The daughter of the unhappy marriage turned out well. She developed her own business and became the breadwinner in her own marriage, planning to have children when circumstances permitted. After some years the business seemed to be on its feet. However, efforts to get pregnant were futile. After repeated medical interventions she did finally conceive and become an excellent mother, balancing conflicting demands successfully, if precariously.

In China economic circumstances usually require that both partners in a marriage work full time. The culture is such that grandparents often stay and look after the children. This seems a sensible arrangement that works because it is culturally accepted. In the West it is less common and grandparents seldom form part of the equation of family life.

Like acrobats balancing opposing forces, careers and family planning remain in difficult apposition to each other. In various countries demographics are becoming more difficult as populations age and birth rates fall except in populations where poverty would reasonably want them to fall. Some enlightened companies now offer young women opportunities to have IVF treatment as a matter of course when they decide that they wish to start a family. The fact that they do this is an acknowledgment of how working conditions do affect fertility deleteriously. Artificial treatment will only be successful in about one third of the cases where couples eventually turn to this for help.
