Top 10:

How presidential elections are impacted by a 100 million year old coastline by Craig McClain:

Hale County in west central Alabama and Bamberg County in southern South Carolina are 450 miles apart. Both counties have a population of 16,000 of which around 60% are African American. The median households and per capita incomes are well below their respective state?s median, in Hale nearly $10,000 less. Both were named after confederate officers?Stephen Fowler Hale and Francis Marion Bamberg. And although Hale?s county seat is the self-proclaimed Catfish Capitol, pulling catfish out of the Edisto River in Bamberg County is a favorite past time. These two counties share another unique feature. Amidst a blanket of Republican red both Hale and Bamberg voted primarily Democratic in the 2000, 2004, and again in the 2008 presidential elections. Indeed, Hale and Bamberg belong to a belt of counties cutting through the deep south?Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina?that have voted over 50% Democratic in recent presidential elections. Why? A 100 million year old coastline?.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Cows by Deborah Blum:

On a bright morning in early June, a Texas rancher named Jerry Abel turned his small herd of cattle out to graze. The 18 cows moved hungrily into that field of fresh grass. Within a few hours, only three were still alive. Abel?s 80 acre ranch sits just a little east of Austin and the story was strange enough that on Sunday a local CBS affiliate picked it up. ?There was nothing you could do,? Abel told KEYE about his desperate efforts to save the animals. ?Obviously, they were dying.??

In the Steps of a Hungry Acrocanthosaurus by Brian Switek:

Compared to mounted dinosaur skeletons, fossil footprints might seem like mundane objects. They only record one small part of a fantastic creature, and it is harder to envision a whole dinosaur from the ground up than the wrap flesh around a skeletal frame. But we should not forget that dinosaur footprints are fossilized behavior?stone snapshots of an animal?s life. And sometimes, trackways record dramatic moments in dinosaur lives?.

When It Comes to Numbers, We?re All Late Bloomers by Elizabeth Preston:

Good news for aspiring jelly-bean jar estimators who are under 30! Your intuitive grasp of numbers may not have peaked yet. Unlike other cognitive skills, the ability to approximate keeps improving well into adulthood. Since the skill is tied to mathematical smarts, this news might bring hope to struggling students?.

Summer of Smoke by Christie Aschwanden:

June 8, 2012, Cedaredge Colorado? It was an ordinary Friday afternoon. I was at my desk writing when I looked out the window and saw an enormous plume of smoke billowing from the back of our property. It was the kind of moment when you?re supposed to remain calm and remember all the wise things you learned in first aid class or girl scouts. (Stop! Drop! Roll!) Instead, I panicked.

Plague at the Siege of Caffa, 1346 by Michelle Ziegler:

The first stage of the Black Death among Europeans was said to begin with the whoosh of a Mongol trebuchet. Gabriele De? Mussi, a lawyer from near Genoa writing in about 1348, is believed to have recorded the account of the earliest use of plague as weapon of war at Caffa in 1346?.

New flu gene found hiding in plain sight, and affects severity of infections by Ed Yong:

I could write the entire genome of a flu virus in around 100 tweets. It is just 14,000 letters long; for comparison, our genome has over 3 billion letters. This tiny collection of genetic material is enough to kill millions of people. Even though it has been sequenced time and time again, there is still a lot we don?t know about it?.

?Man-sheep-dog?: inter-species social skills by Paul Keil and Greg Downey:

Paul, the lead author, interviewed sheepdog trialer Damian Wilson about his interactions with his dog, a border collie named Yandarra Whiskey. Damian and Whiskey gave Paul a demonstration of the techniques used in sheepdog competitions as they together tried to move a mob of three sheep. In a competition in New South Wales, a trainer and dog have to move three sheep who have never been herded through a difficult obstacle course, and the trainer loses points if he (or, less frequently, she) breaks from a slow, measured pace walking the course. The rules mean that the dog itself must be trained until it anticipates the sheep?s reactions, and understands, on some level, what dog and trainer, together, are trying to accomplish. Although the trialer may give commands, the dog, too, is a kind of expert?.

Preview: 3-D Space Shuttle Movie Will Bring the Launch Pad to Your Living Room by Tanya Lewis:

If you missed the final launch of the Space Shuttle, or the first private spacecraft rendezvous with the International Space Station, fear not. A new documentary to be released late this year promises you a fiery, 3-D, launch-pad view of these historic flights?

A Wartime Medical Dispenser by Jaipreet Virdi:

The Napoleonic Wars brought John Harrison Curtis? studies to a standstill, as he became one of thousands of young men conscripted to fight against Napoleonic advances towards Britain. With his medical learning in hand, Curtis enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1808, to obtain his qualifications as surgeon and extend his medical skills. Since 1745, the Royal College of Surgeons in London, Edinburgh and Dublin, and the Navy held close associations with each other as the College was responsible for examining naval surgeons for active service. To be admitted as surgeon in the navy, candidates had to obtain a certificate of competence from the College and then be subjected to a two-hour oral examination at Somerset House?.

Magical Weather for iPad review

Weather is one of those apps that comes stock on the iPhone, yet is nowhere to be found on the iPad. If a weather app is something you want on your iPad, Magical Weather is an interesting choice. It isn't feature heavy, but it looks nice, provides 24-hr and 6-day forecasts, and includes beautiful animations related to the current weather conditions in the background.

Mike Pledges to Improve Breast Cancer Survival Rates | Mike ...

29th June 2012

Mike has committed to improving outcomes for breast cancer patients at a Parliamentary reception that was hosted by Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and eradication of breast cancer. As well as funding around a quarter of breast cancer research in the UK, Breakthrough persistently campaigns for better services and treatments and continues to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer to enable early detection. For more information or to donate, please see www.breakthrough.org.uk.

Commenting, Mike said: ?The UK?s breast cancer survival rates are behind many other European countries. Hundreds more lives could be saved by raising awareness. More than 48,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK and I want to make sure that everyone in Westminster and Hove and Portslade knows that we can do much more.?

After 13 days in orbit, China's first female astronaut returns to Earth (+video)

The three-member crew, which includes China's first female astronaut, emerged grinning from their Shenzhou?9 space capsule.

By Christopher Bodeen,?Associated Press / June 29, 2012

Chinese astronauts Jing Haipeng, Liu Wang and Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut, salute in front of the re-entry capsule of China's Shenzhou 9 spacecraft in Siziwang Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

China's first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth on Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station.

Chip Reid reports.

The?Shenzhou?9?parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country's sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module ? the space program's longest and most challenging yet ? a major stride ahead for the country's ambitious space program.

About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut.

The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

"Tiangong 1, our home in space, was comfortable and pleasant. We're very proud of our nation," Liu Yang told national broadcaster CCTV.

Space program commander, Gen. Chang Wanchuan, declared the astronauts in good health and declared the mission "completely successful."

He was followed by Premier Wen Jiabao, who said the mission marked "absolutely important progress" for the space program.

The mission had included both remote control and piloted dockings with the module and extensive medical monitoring of the astronauts as part of preparations for manning a permanent space station.

China's next goals include another manned mission to the module originally scheduled for later this year but which may be delayed depending on an evaluation of the?Shenzhou?9?mission and the condition of the Tiangong 1. China has been extremely cautious and methodical in its manned missions, with more than three years passing since the previous one, and all four have been relatively problem-free.

Chen Shanguang, director for the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Center, told a news conference that preparations and selection of astronauts were already under way for the?Shenzhou?10 mission.

Tiangong 1 is due to be retired in a few years and replaced with a permanent space station around 2020 that will weigh about 60 tons, slightly smaller than NASA's Skylab of the 1970s and about one-sixth the size of the 16-nation International Space Station that China was barred from participating in, largely on objections from the United States. Possible future missions could include sending a rover to the moon, possibly followed by a manned lunar mission. Launched June 16 from the Jiuquan center on the edge of the Gobi desert in northern China,?Shenzhou?9?is the latest success for China's manned space program that launched its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space in 2003, making China just the third nation after Russia and the U.S. to achieve that feat. China would also be the third country after the United States and Russia to send independently maintained space stations into orbit.

Earlier in the week, a spokeswoman said China spent 20 billion yuan ($3.1 billion) on its space program between 1992 and 2005 ? a rare admission for a program with close links to the secretive military. By the time the next?Shenzhou?mission is completed, Beijing will have spent an additional 19 billion yuan ($3 billion), the spokeswoman said.

Wang Zhaoyao, director of China's manned space program office, said the program mirrors the rising global status of China.

"For any country, for any people, a space program is indispensable," Wang said.

Simple Guide On How To Improve Your House

jeflpdlmwe Posted by jeflpdlmwe on 1 day ago

A nice addition to any home is a nicely crafted fence. If your home is lacking a fence, you might decide it is time to build one. Fences look great in just about any home and can help raise the property value of your home. You can also feel a little more secure, as having a fence can help keep random strangers off your property.

If you do not already have one, add a second bathroom to your home. The main reason for this is so your family does not have to fight over one bathroom. Another reason for adding another bathroom is for resale value. Having two bathrooms makes a home more attractive for potential buyers.

Even if you are an expert and home improvement tasks, leave the plumbing to the professionals. With many people wanting to do a majority of home improvements themselves, they get tempted to going into areas that are meant for professionals. Plumbing is one of those areas that should be left to the professionals because they can be far too difficult or even dangerous.

Make sure that any contract you sign when buying a home has your interests at heart. You need to have time to get financing, arrange a home inspection and discuss any problems in the home that may need repair. A contract that is written to protect you, is essential in giving you peace of mind and allowing you to enjoy your new home.

If you are thinking about repainting the exterior of your home and the existing paint is in good shape, pressure wash the outside of the home prior to putting on new primer. This will get any dirt and debris off the old paint and give the primer a good surface to bond with.

What you have just learned from the tips above might not be as specific as you need for any one particular project, but you should get a good idea of how you need to prepare for a home improvement project. It?s not just something you should leap into. Use what you?ve learned here to act as your guide. locations

Seagate and DensBits team up on solid-state drives for the home, call truce in the HDD versus SSD war

Seagate Pulsar XT 2It's an understatement to say that Seagate started off on the wrong foot in its attitude towards solid-state drives: the company only slowly came around to embracing flash memory, and then mostly for the enterprise crowd and hybrid drive lovers. A newly-struck partnership between Seagate controller maker DensBits is signalling a more serious attempt to offer SSDs to everyday users. Along with catering to the business folk, Seagate wants its new teammate's help on building "low-cost, high-performance" consumer SSDs. Most of the drives for the plebeians will use slower but denser 3-bits-per-cell memory made on a process under 20 nanometers, while the suits will get faster 2-bits-per-cell flash for their servers. The deal doesn't have any timetable attached, although Seagate's decision to pour equity cash into DensBits suggests it's not just a one-time fling.

Romancing the firefly

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? The twinkling of fireflies heralds summer romance for these magical insects. While courting on-the-wing, male fireflies attract females' attention with bioluminescent flashes.

But new research from biologists at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences, published online in Proceedings of the Royal Society -- Biological Sciences, reveals that, after the lights go out, female fireflies prefer substance over flash. They seem to choose mates able to give them the largest "nuptial gift" (a high protein sperm package that helps females produce more eggs) without regard to flashes. Those generous males are also more likely to succeed in becoming the fathers of the next firefly generation.

Previous work on Photinus fireflies shows that females are very picky during the on-wing stage of courtship. These females will only flash a response toward select males that light up with especially attractive courtship flashes. After a lengthy back-and-forth exchange, the flashing stops, the lights go out, and firefly pairs spend the night together.

A night of firefly romance also includes gifts, called spermatophores, that each male donates to his sweetheart. But the next night these females are likely to mate again with a different male.

After a female has mated with several males, the big evolutionary question becomes: which male gets to pass along his genes to the next generation of firefly babies?

"Lots of people don't realize that sexual selection is happening not only before mating, but also during and even after mating," said Professor of Biology Sara Lewis, an expert on the evolutionary process of sexual selection and senior author on the paper. "Focusing on what happens after contact, we wanted to examine how much a male's success -- in both mating and fathering offspring -- depended on his flashes or on his nuptial gift offering."

Lewis and coauthor Adam South, who studied in the Lewis lab and recently received his Ph.D. from Tufts' Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, set up an experiment using infrared video and paternity testing based on firefly DNA to determine what makes certain males more successful after the lights go out.

To get the female fireflies in the mood, the researchers relied on LED lights programmed to make two kinds of flashes. Some females saw only artificial male flashes determined by previous research to be highly attractive to females; others saw unattractive flashes.

Male fireflies were also split into two groups: virgins whose nuptial gifts were large since the males had never mated and males whose spermatophores were smaller because they had mated the previous night. After several minutes of courtship flashing, males and females were put together in pairs, and the Tufts biologists videotaped their close-up courtship behaviors under infrared illumination. Because they take place under cover of darkness, many of these behaviors had never before been observed.

Analysis of hours of firefly video revealed that once a female was in close quarters with a male, she was much more likely to mate with males that had larger nuptial gifts to offer, as determined by the researchers' later examination. The females didn't seem to care what kind of male flashes they had seen.

"We were surprised to discover that attractive flashes only seem to benefit males during the early stages of firefly courtship," said South. "Initially, flashes are important. Female fireflies preferentially respond to males based on temporal flash characteristics. Once males make physical contact, however, females switch to an alternative cue -- one that's related to male nuptial gift size. What makes this especially intriguing is that females have no way to directly evaluate gift size, since it's created and transferred internally."

Furthermore, when females mated sequentially with two different males, paternity testing of their offspring revealed yet another benefit for big gift-givers. Males that gave larger nuptial gifts fathered more of their mate's offspring compared with rival males. South and Lewis say that's probably because larger gifts contain more sperm.

So not unlike human romance, love remains a mystery among fireflies and first impressions are only part of the story. While a female's initial assessment of potential mates is based on males' luminescent flashes, the Tufts research shows that once a pair makes contact, sexy flashes no longer matter. Instead, it's those males that have larger nuptial gifts to give that win out with higher reproductive success. Males with limited resources may face a trade-off between investing either in sexy flashes or in costly gifts.

The work was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Human-powered copter breaks record with 50-sec flight

1 day

A team at the University of Maryland has blown away a long-standing (or long-hovering) record for human-powered flight. A Japanese team stayed aloft for 19 seconds in 1994, and no one has been able to do better until Thursday, when the Maryland team stayed aloft for 50 seconds. They fell just?short, however, of the 60 seconds required to qualify for a decades-old $250,000?prize.

Gamera II is the name of the helicopter the team constructed in order to claim the Sikorsky prize, created in 1980 in memory of the helicopter?pioneer Igor Sikorsky.?The contest requires that the craft reach 3 meters of altitude ? and that it stays there for a full minute.?

The newest version of the craft weighs only 71 pounds, 30 less than the previous one, which?stayed aloft for 11 seconds in 2011. Gamera II?harvests power from arm movements as well as pedals, transmitting more power to the four large rotors. These and other improvements allowed the team to break the 18-year-old record and post a time of 50 seconds in the air at 2 feet up. Watch the video of that flight below:

The team will continue to make attempts at the 60-second goal, though they would still need to go significantly higher to claim the prize money, even if they hit the minute mark. The solution is not as easy as simply pedaling harder. Gamera II takes advantage of an aerodynamic characteristic of low-altitude craft called ground effect, which reduces the energy needed to hover, and that advantage decreases the higher the craft goes.

The researchers from Maryland are not the only ones working on the problem: A private team called Atlas recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise some funding for their attempt on the Sikorsky prize. The requirements of the prize may be straightforward, but they are also extremely difficult, so chances are it will take some time and effort, not to mention money and materials, to make it happen.

Angels continue domination of Dodgers

By GREG BEACHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:32 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - The largest combined crowd in Angel Stadium history attended the three-game Freeway Series, with Angels and Dodgers fans sharing rows and alternating chants throughout a boisterous weekend.

Everybody left Anaheim on Sunday with another confirmation of the current standings in Los Angeles baseball. Although the Dodgers are leading the NL, the Angels are firmly on top of this rivalry.

Mark Trumbo drove in Albert Pujols with the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning, and the Angels won their series with the Dodgers for the third straight year with a 5-3 victory Sunday.

Peter Bourjos hit an early two-run homer and Howie Kendrick added another RBI single in the seventh for the Angels, who took four of six from the Dodgers in the past two weeks - including two of three this weekend in front of a combined 133,035 fans.

The Angels haven't lost the local derby since 2006, and they've won 13 of their last 18 games against the Dodgers, who have the NL's best record. Just don't ask former Dodgers catcher Mike Scioscia if it means anything.

"We've been a better ballclub as the season has gone on, and that has to continue," said the Angels manager, ejected in the fifth inning for arguing a call at third base. "It doesn't matter who we're playing or where we're playing, but how we're playing. ... We certainly had some mistakes and some calls that didn't go our way, but we played at a high enough level and got enough clutch hits to absorb it."

Scott Downs (1-0) pitched one hitless inning of relief, and Ernesto Frieri got four outs to earn his ninth save for the Angels, who have won 11 of 15 and 22 of 30 while surging up the standings over the last month. Frieri struck out Gordon with a runner on second base to end it.

The Angels also cemented their spot as the majors' best interleague team since the start of the 2007 season, improving to 74-34 after going 12-6 against NL clubs this season. The Angels have won 14 of their last 15 interleague series overall.

Pujols drove in Mike Trout with a go-ahead run in the fifth inning moments before Scioscia was ejected. Juan Rivera doubled and scored on Adam Kennedy's flyout to even it for the Dodgers in the sixth.

Trumbo and Kendrick then capped a two-out rally against Dodgers reliever Josh Lindblom (2-2) with singles, driving home Pujols and Kendrys Morales.

"Our chemistry has always been there, but it's always more fun when you're winning a lot of games," said Trumbo, who impressively connected with an inside fastball for his big hit.

Bobby Abreu and Dee Gordon drove in early runs for the slumping Dodgers, who have lost six of their last eight games. Both teams dropped playable popups and endured close umpiring calls, but the Dodgers couldn't match the Angels' late-game execution while losing their sixth straight series to the Angels.

"It seems like wherever I've been, to be honest, we've had trouble with those guys," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, a coach with Joe Torre's Yankees when the Angels constantly gave trouble to New York. "They're a good club, and they've had good clubs, and there's a reason why. They've got talent, they come after you and they're aggressive."

Garrett Richards struggled through much of his seventh career start for the Angels after giving up just two earned runs in his previous four starts while ace Jered Weaver was on the disabled list. The rookie, who's still in the rotation with Jerome Williams on the DL with breathing problems, hung on into the seventh while yielding nine hits and two walks, striking out five.

Aaron Harang yielded eight hits and three runs in six innings for the Dodgers, walking just two Angels after issuing a career-high eight walks in his last start in Oakland.

All three former Angels in the Dodgers' starting lineup contributed. Abreu hurt the team that's still paying his exorbitant salary with a run-scoring single in the first, while Rivera and Kennedy teamed up for a run in the sixth.

Bourjos evened it in the second with a shot into the bullpen in left field, connecting a few pitches after his drive down the right-field line was mistakenly ruled foul. Bourjos has been struggling for consistent playing time and hadn't homered since his inside-the-park shot in Minnesota on April 11.

Pujols started the Angels' seventh-inning rally by drawing his 1,000th career walk, becoming the 12th active major leaguer to reach the milestone.

"I basically beat myself, getting two quick outs and then giving in to Pujols in that situation," Lindblom said. "Then I hit Morales, and everything just kind of steamrolled from that point. They're a great lineup."

NOTES: Scioscia was tossed for the second time this season and the 33rd time in his career. ... The Dodgers open a three-game rivalry series at San Francisco's waterfront ballpark Monday night with Nathan Eovaldi facing struggling Barry Zito. ... Bourjos hadn't hit a ball out of a park since last Sept. 21.

Nano-sandwich technique slims down solar cells, improves efficiency

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Researchers from North Carolina State University have found a way to create much slimmer thin-film solar cells without sacrificing the cells' ability to absorb solar energy. Making the cells thinner should significantly decrease manufacturing costs for the technology.

"We were able to create solar cells using a 'nanoscale sandwich' design with an ultra-thin 'active' layer," says Dr. Linyou Cao, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research. "For example, we created a solar cell with an active layer of amorphous silicon that is only 70 nanometers (nm) thick. This is a significant improvement, because typical thin-film solar cells currently on the market that also use amorphous silicon have active layers between 300 and 500 nm thick." The "active" layer in thin-film solar cells is the layer of material that actually absorbs solar energy for conversion into electricity or chemical fuel.

"The technique we've developed is very important because it can be generally applied to many other solar cell materials, such as cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium selenide, and organic materials," Cao adds.

The new technique relies largely on conventional manufacturing processes, but results in a very different finished product. The first step is to create a pattern on the substrate using standard lithography techniques. The pattern outlines structures made of transparent, dielectric material measuring between 200 and 300 nm. The researchers then coat the substrate and the nanostructures with an extremely thin layer of active material, such as amorphous silicon. This active layer is then coated with another layer of dielectric material.

Using dielectric nanostructures beneath the active layer creates a thin film with elevated surfaces evenly spaced all along the film -- like crenellations at the top of a medieval castle.

"One key aspect of this technique is the design of the 'nanoscale sandwich,' with the active materials in the middle of two dielectric layers. The nanostructures act as very efficient optical antennas," Cao says, "focusing the solar energy into the active material. This focusing means we can use a thinner active layer without sacrificing performance. In the conventional thin-film design, using a thinner active layer would impair the solar cell's efficiency."

The paper, "Dielectric Core-shell Optical Antennas for Strong Solar Absorption Enhancement," is published online in Nano Letters. Lead author of the paper is Yiling Yu, a Ph.D. student at NC State. Co-authors include Drs. Vivian Ferry and Paul Alivisatos of the University of California, Berkeley. The research was supported, in part, by the U.S. Department of Energy.
