Cary Goldstein, publisher and editor-in-chief of Twelve, acquired Amity Gaige?s novel Schroder at auction from Gaige?s agent, Wendy Weil, in 2011. The novel is the intricate epistolary story of a German man who adopts a new identity in America and goes for an adventure with his 6-year-old daughter?an adventure that is not all it seems. Goldstein and Gaige talked about their editorial relationship, the impact the late Weil had on Gaige?s life and career, and the music of George and Martha yelling at each other.

Cary Goldstein: You had told me at some point about a novel you were writing that took place on one day in two nations, following?I may be misremembering this?two possible paths a Latvian woman's life could have taken. You even sent me a mix CD of the music fueling it. You can imagine my surprise when Schroder arrived on submission. What happened that made you drop one project to write an entirely new one?

Amity Gaige: Yes, my Great Latvian-American Novel. There was something too inevitable about it. I wanted?and still want?to tell my mother's story. She fled Stalin's army in 1944, leaving Latvia, which was to be occupied by the Soviets for the next 50 years, and arrived to the U.S. when she was 11. I wanted to create a what-if novel: What if she had stayed in Latvia? Who would she have been had she not been wrenched from her cultural context?

I got to spend time in Latvia?that was probably the best part of the whole escapade. I researched, I thought, I drank the local balsams, and what do you know, one morning I'm sitting in my Riga hotel and I read the "newspaper"?a fax of short news stories?they'd put by my breakfast plate, and there is this article about a man called Clark Rockefeller. The article was maybe 10 lines long, but in it I discovered this man was arrested after abducting his own daughter, whom he apparently adored, and in the course of things was revealed to be a fraud and a con-man?a German, no Rockefeller. I have to stress here that I never read a thing further about that real case. But the themes from my Great Latvian-American Novel ? exile, identity, longing?leapt into a new context.

Truth is, I think I was also experiencing a minor crisis of faith about the novel form itself. I liked my Parallel-Stories-What-If-Great-Latvian-American-Novel-With-a-Soundtrack. But I saw how I would go about it too well. I would use an architectonic form (? la Anna Karenina), and if I could just muster all of the details, build the elaborate scenery, I could write it convincingly. But one doesn't sign up to be a writer with the dream of writing "convincingly."

At least I have the soundtrack. Did you like it?

Goldstein: You called it ?Eddie Hearts Justine,? it's fantastic. Cocteau Twins, Dead Milkmen, the Sugarcubes ...

Gaige: The best bits of what I have on that novel?a hundred pages or so?happened to be these lively scenes between two American teenagers in 1989, loving one another across class lines, making out under a boom box on a window sill.

Goldstein: A hundred pages on two teens making out? I want to read that! It?s like Nicholson Baker by way of John Hughes. There is something in it that seems unmistakably you in its tight focus on two people?insular, intimate, with an almost claustrophobic intensity. It's what I so loved about your first novel, O My Darling. Only in Schroder, the bubble we're brought inside of isn't a lover's bubble, but a father and daughter's.

Gaige: I think marriage and family keeps being written about because that's where we keep our reputations with ourselves?I mean, we can't quite slip the truths we reveal about ourselves at home. I was and still am an Edward Albee devotee. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is, to my mind, a work of perfect genius. Not only does it sizzle?no, burn?with every line, but it also demonstrates that in some ways, love is a performance, identity is a performance.

Goldstein: I remember telling an old boss of mine how much I loved George and Martha's sparring, how musical I found it. She looked at me with horror. She couldn't bear the sound of people yelling. In my house I guess it was the yelling that connected us. We allowed each other to announce our wounds and somehow knew that meant we loved and were loved. That's a far cry from playing Get the Guests, though.

Gaige: I feel like you and I love the same books. I'm always hollering, Yeah, I love that book, too! when you're talking about something. Revolutionary Road. Stoner. The Sportswriter. (Actually, didn't I turn you on to that one?)

Goldstein: Stoner?what an incurably lonely book, so beautiful and inevitable. I wasn't at all prepared for that book. I think my favorite writers can articulate something I wished I'd said myself. Or wished I'd noticed at all. Access points. And you absolutely did turn me on to The Sportswriter, which I hadn?t read. It is just lousy with access points, they're everywhere in it.

What role does reading play for you while you're writing?

Gaige: Reading while I'm writing ideally inspires my competitive side. When I read great writers, I want to be a better writer. I want to put my knife between my teeth and get to work already. It's not an unpleasant feeling, even when I feel unworthy of that writer's company. A great sentence can really do it, too. A perfect sentence. Like this one from John Banville?s The Sea, which I think was an influence on Schroder: ?The past beats inside me like a second heart.? Of course, it's a hazard of the profession to develop this scavenging nature to one's reading life. I become impatient with the deliberate, determined way many (even very good) novels set up their groundwork. I just want those lines, and those "access points," to borrow your phrase. Maybe because of this impatience, I favor reading poetry before I start to write. Poetry immediately puts me in the writing mind.

Goldstein: It was the poetry in your work that got me. I was turned on to O My Darling by a mutual friend of ours, and I vividly remember being stopped short by a scene in which the young wife and her husband's dead mother's dog square off in the corner of the bedroom, vying for territory. Gorgeous. So I sent you a fan letter.

3 Last Minute Survival Scenarios ? Just Wondering ? Alternative ...

survival-425

Contributor

We know that waiting till the last second is not a good idea, but for some it is the only option. So we have taken three possible average scenarios and broken them down for you. All scenarios will include a family of 4 ? Mom, Dad and two kids under high school age ? living in the suburbs of a megaplex city?

Scenario #1

You have a few cases of water
You have some freeze-dried storage food, maybe a 30 day supply.
You have some sleeping bags and some basic camping supplies.
You have a general idea of the area to which you want to go.
You think maybe something might happen in which case you could need to get your family out of the city.
All supplies are in the garage, ready to load into your minivan should the need arise.

You live in a suburban area of a mexaplex city ? first and foremost, where the hell are you going to go? If you are starting out with only a general idea of where to go, you are planning to fail. Knowing exactly where you are going and a little preparation are very much in order. Even if your plan is to squat on BLM land, National Forest Service land or private land, just having a general idea of where you are going is dangerous. You, see, in your suburb of a megaplex area, how many other people have the same general idea? Of those of like mind, most likely that?s a very high percentage. So have something better than a general idea. Know exactly where you are going and if it?s remote enough, you can hide supplies (not what you must have for survival, but that which you would like to have with you there) in the trees. You just need a cammo cargo net and some rope. Hoist it high into a tree, hidden by the foliage.

Here is an idea I?ve been discussing with people lately. Call it ?Free Advice?: If you have no where to go then the National Forrest my be your best bet. There are several very remote FREE National Forrest camp grounds, (http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/list/nflist.htm) that you can take advantage of. There is one around here (20 miles away) that is very remote and almost no one comes around unless its elk season (Sept. thru Dec.). So before you decide on a campground, check out what dates are the hunting season. Some National Forrest campgrounds have water, some have toilet dumps, most have toilets, some have showers? I have even seen a laundrette at one, and almost no one ever using it. The occasional park ranger will pass by. The Free campground space can by used for 14 consecutive days at a time. Some park rangers interpret this to mean that you must leave the park others interpret it that you have to move to another space in the same campground every 14 days. Either way, if you had to leave the park for one day, only to return the next day, that works, too.

Next to consider is, what would prompt your leaving? Most everyone completely ignores this one because they believe that when the time comes, they?ll ?just know?. What is needed is a clear-cut definition of what event would prompt your bugging out. Even if you jump the gun and get to your survival location too soon, you can always go back to suburbia if you feel the coast is still clear. Some possible guidelines would be: war in Syria or Iran, a banking holiday, if you see military troops in your town setting up check points.

Back in the day there was an old hippie bumper sticker that said, ?The Revolution Will Not Be Televised?. It is also true that CNNFOXABCNBCCBSMSNBC et al will NOT have a news flash that says ?Marshall law will be declared in 30 minutes, so if you?re going to boogie, do it now!? Just remember, if you wait until there is clear unambiguous proof that it?s time to go, you just might find yourself in a traffic jam and no further.

For transportation, a minivan is not going to get you any place safe enough. Consider getting something more robust, such as an older pick up truck (pre-95 is best ? simple electronics, less susceptible to EMP and solar flares) with an extend-a-cab or club-cab for the kids. The RV market has collapsed. Prices have never been lower on used RVs of all types.

With a pickup truck you could get a cab-over camper quite inexpensively. These slip into the cargo area of a pick up. Most sleep 4 or more, have a toilet, shower, water storage tank, oven, range, sink, dining area, a closet and cabinet space. With the economy the way it is, watching craigslist you will find great bargains. Most people are paying in the neighborhood of $500 for an older but still serviceable cab-over camper. If a pick up truck is just not something you can do, then you may want to consider a Coleman-type pop-up camper, which can be towed behind even some compact cars with ease (also about $500 on craigslist). You can use either type of camper to store everything you will need to take with you to your bug-out location, and you?ll be able to just hook up and go when it?s time, no need to think about what to bring. It?s the ultimate ?bug-out-bag?. You can have hundreds of pounds of food and water and supplies in it, without having to crowd the supplies and the family into the minivan.

If the only water you have is a couple of cases, that won?t do it. A case of water is about 2-1/2 gallons of water on average. How many cases can you carry? If you have a cab-over or pop-up camper, both have a fresh water tank to store in the area of 150-200 gallons of water. Check and see if the place you have chosen for your bug-out has any access to water ? lake, pond, stream, river, pump, well, etc. The average person, under Spartan conditions, can just get by on one gallon per day ? 2 quarts to drink and a couple of quarts for cooking and hygiene. Consider the water you?ll need if your food is dehydrated or freeze-dried! So for 4 of you, with a 200 gallon water tank, you would have enough for about 50 days.

If all you have is freeze-dried or dehydrated items for food, you will want to have some items to supplement that, so that you don?t experience appetite fatigue. We would suggest some of the following be added to your supplies for long-term evacuation:
Cocoa Powder
Sugar
Coffee/Tea
Cooking Oil
Flour
Popcorn
Spices
Dried Fruits
Nuts
Jerky
Baking Soda
Vinegar
Molasses

Plus any family favorites, just to break the monotony.

Also, throw into your packing some board games, deck of cards, books, etc., toilet paper and RV toilet sanitizer (blue stuff). If you have extra jeans, socks, shirts, sneakers, shoes/boots ? the clothing you bring can be used outdoors with ease ? as well as toiletries should also be packed. Don?t forget to include a first aid kit. For some of you it will be a military medic/field surgical kit, for others it will be some antiseptic, gauze and tape, depending on your skill level.

Scenario #2

You (and your family) are going to stay in your suburban home.
You have 6 cases of water
You have 6 cases of Dinty Moore Beef Stew and a few miscellaneous canned goods.
You have a shotgun
You don?t want to tell your wife and kids what may be coming up in the near future because it will rock their world. Besides, ?they?ll think I?m nuts.?

In this scenario, there is no need to have a bug-out time definition. But you still need to know what to look for so that you know when to hunker down. So, again, some pre-defined conditions bear strong consideration. What to do, when such and such a thing happens, including a rendezvous place for children to meet you for picking up.

Food will be your biggest concern. Let?s first deal with the ?having?. You?ll need to have food. Basically, nothing different than the previous scenario, although not having to consider transportation, you can store more of it. More importantly, you?ll need to be covert. Being in the suburbs means being around lots of people. Lots of hungry people. The smell of cooking can attract predators ? of all kinds: hungry neighborhood dogs and cats going feral, not to mention your neighbors, themselves, who undoubtedly are hungry. The smell of your cooking anything is going to bring people either knocking on or breaking down your door. What would you do if your kids hadn?t eaten in a week and you smelled food?

Cooking hot food in the suburban environment could garner you a lot of negative attention. For these reasons, ready to eat foods (jerky, dried fruits and vegetables, cookies and crackers) are most desirable. For some of you that might be military MREs. We don?t recommend them as a steady diet ? too much GMO and MSG to name a few ? but in this case they may be useful against hunger while maintaining a low profile.

The power that pumps water to your house may well be disabled. That means that you will not have water coming from your faucet, nor to your toilet for flushing. The -Mart stores sell 5 gallon water bottles (like those used in water coolers) for about $5 each. Get yourself as many as you can, fill them and cover them up where you have your storage items. Refer to the above scenario for daily requirements. Also, fill all your sinks and bathtubs with water while you still have power. Place a garbage bag over the sinks and bathtubs to keep the dust out of the water. Often times forgotten, your water heater has a spigot at the bottom of it, from which you can access the water in there as well ? usually anywhere from 20-40 gallons of additional, usable water.

Some rules about toilet water usage? ?If it?s yellow, let it mellow. If it?s brown, flush it down.? Save the water from washing up (gray water) to use ? as little as possible ? to do the flushing. Pour it into the bowl until the ?brown goes down?. If you want to pour your gray water into your toilet tank, add rocks (too large to get into the flapper hole) or bricks into the tank so that they take up some of the unnecessary water space.

Now, for these scenarios, here is a lesson in ?How Not to Be Seen? (with a tip of the hat to Monty Python). For evacuation scenarios, if you are in a very secluded part of say, the National Forest or private land, it?s a safe bet that if you encounter other people who are not part of your group, you will be encountering trouble. So my advice would be, ?if people move in, move out? and choose another camping sight.

Avoid having large, smoky fires that would attract others. Do most of your fireside cooking during the day and avoid night time fires completely. Also, avoid loud talking, loud music, etc. Don?t think that because you can?t see anyone around you, it?s okay to play your Lead Zeppelin CDs at 800 decibels and no one would notice. You would be surprised how far sound travels in the wilderness, without car noises, people noises, etc., drowning it out.

For Suburban How not to be seen, use no night time lights, even if you have plenty of candles and flashlights. If you do need to illuminate something, do it discretely and for a short time, preferably in a room that has few windows. It?s a good idea to put heavy drapes on your windows also, as long as there are no gaps. Avoid going outside and therefore being noticed. If you have a garage, put your car into it. A car parked outside lets others know there are people inside ? not what you want to do. The car battery can be used as a 12 volt power source if needed, and you can hook up a 110 AC power inverter to use as a house current power source.

?I don?t want to tell the wife and kids what may be coming up in the future because I don?t want to shake their world.? Better to have them prepared than having to follow your instructions while they are in a panic. Like in the movie Knowing, when the little girl?s mother panics, grabs the kids and drives madly toward a cave she knows (so does everyone else), it?s not a good situation. It doesn?t end well. Even if your family thinks you are a tin-foil-hat-wearing loon, if you have at least told them in advance what the trigger point would be, when that point arrives it will be that much less of a shock and they will be apt to be much more on board when the time comes. At some point they?ll have to face it anyway. Better they be prepared than blissfully ignorant until that point.

Scenario #3

You (and your family) are already living at your survival retreat.
You are off the grid, self-sufficient and lovin? the life!
When TSHTF, it will just be another day.

Way to go!

PFT: McCoy thinks Vick is the starting quarterback

Cincinnati Bengals' Carlos Dunlap celebrates with Michael Johnson after sacking Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyrod Taylor during the second half of play in their NFL football game at Paul Brown Stadium in CincinnatiReuters

Having cultivated Michael Johnson, the Bengals weren?t about to let him go.

The Bengals are going to hang onto the fifth-year defensive end by use of the franchise tag, guaranteeing him at least a one-year, $11.175 million deal if they don?t reach a long-term contract.

But that?s still the goal, according to Bengals coach Marvin Lewis.

?Obviously we are committed to re-signing Mike,? Lewis said in comments distributed by the team, ?and this move is part of the process to keep a young and promising defense together.

?Mike has worked hard to improve himself every year during his time as a Bengal, helping us to the postseason three of four years. We have every reason to believe he will continue to grow as a leader and productive player.?

The former third-round pick blossomed last year, with 11.5 sacks and growing as a run defender.

?This guy has come up in our system, he plays about 85 percent of our snaps, and he?s the kind of guy we love to have around,? defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. ?He?s hard-working and a great team player. He?s an outstanding run defender in addition to his pass rush production. He?s got great length and size, and great speed off the edge.?

And that combination of factors would have made him highly sought after, which led the Bengals to tag him at the risk of losing right tackle Andre Smith.

Fiscal emergency declared in Detroit by Michigan governor

Gov. Rick Snyder has a candidate in mind to take over the struggling city's finances, though he did not identify that person when he made his declaration Friday.

Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan declared a financial emergency in Detroit on Friday, pushing the city closer to having a state-appointed emergency manager control its finances.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder on Friday formally declared Detroit in a fiscal emergency and said he had identified a top candidate to take over financial management of the destitute city.

The declaration virtually assures that the state of Michigan will assume control of Detroit's books, though Snyder was careful to say there is still a window of 10 days for city leaders to convince him otherwise.

"I believe it's appropriate to declare the city of Detroit in financial emergency," Snyder told a forum of community leaders at a Detroit public television station.

Detroit has faced the steepest population decline of any major American city in recent decades. Once the fifth largest US city, which shone as the birthplace of the US automotive industry and Motown music, it now ranks 18th in size with about 700,000 people - after suffering a 25 percent decline in population between 2000 and 2010.

Snyder would not identify the top candidate to run Detroit or say whether the person was from Michigan or outside the state. Some residents have said he should name an African-American to manage a city that is 83 percent black.

Referring to the candidate, the Republican governor said, "They have vast experience working on relationships, they have strong financial knowledge, strong legal knowledge and that ability to say how do we build teams and work together," the Republican governor said of the candidate.

The emergency manager will eventually have vast powers to develop a financial plan, revise or reject budgets, consolidate departments, reduce or eliminate the salaries of elected officials, sell eligible city assets, lay off workers and renegotiate labor contracts.

With the exodus of residents and jobs as the auto industry contracted, the city has suffered from declining tax revenue and rising crime while saddled with the infrastructure and labor costs of a bygone era.

"We went from the top to the bottom over the last 50 or 60 years," Snyder said of the city.

The immediate reaction of Detroit officials and residents was skepticism about the move, which would strip the elected leadership of the city of much of their power.

City Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown said he was opposed to the move because it, "eliminates the democratically elected leadership in our city."

Detroit officials now have 10 days to request a hearing with the governor about his decision. Snyder said the hearing would be held on March 12. The nine-member city council has been preparing to argue that Detroit should not have an emergency manager and could also appeal the decision in state court.

After the hearing, Snyder will either confirm or revoke the declaration of emergency. If he confirms the emergency, as expected, management of Detroit's fiscal affairs would revert to a board composed of three state officials who will be Snyder appointees. The board would formally appoint an emergency manager, although in practice Snyder will make the final decision.

A court appeal of Snyder's decision would not delay the appointment of a manager, who could ultimately recommend Detroit file for bankruptcy in the largest such municipal filing in US history.

Snyder based his emergency declaration on a report of experts that described a city sinking under more than $14 billion of debt and on track to end its current fiscal year $100 million in the red. Snyder said that Detroit's creditors should be brought to the table to renegotiate debt terms by possibly delaying or relieving payments.

"This should be part of the strategy that needs to take place," he said.

A Michigan law that takes effect March 28 will allow existing emergency financial managers to remain in place and give them additional powers, including the ability to revise or terminate collective bargaining agreements.

Suspect in Las Vegas Strip shooting arrested in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A man accused of gunning down an aspiring rapper as he drove on the Las Vegas Strip last week, touching off a fiery car crash that also killed two other people, was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday after an exhaustive multi-state manhunt.

Ammar Harris, 26, surrendered at an apartment in the North Hollywood section of Los Angeles after it was surrounded by members of a joint Los Angeles police and FBI task force, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lieutenant Ray Steiber said.

"Officers and detectives converged on that area, he was challenged to come out of that area and he did peacefully," Steiber told a news conference. "He was taken into custody."

Police accuse Harris of opening fire in the pre-dawn hours of February 21 from a black Range Rover on the Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. in an intersection at the heart of the Strip, near several casino resort hotels.

Cherry, who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch," was fatally wounded and his sports car veered out of control, colliding with a taxicab. The cab exploded into flames, killing driver Michael Bolden, 62, and his passenger Sandi Sutton-Wasmund, 48.

Harris was booked into Los Angeles County Jail, where he was being held without bail pending an extradition hearing scheduled for Monday morning.

Steiber declined to say how police tracked Harris to the North Hollywood apartment or how long they believed he had been there, but said he had left Las Vegas soon after the high-profile shooting in the heart of the desert resort city.

"Mr. Harris was a fleeing felon," Steiber said. "He left Las Vegas shortly after this event occurred. He did leave Las Vegas pretty rapidly."

'HEINOUS CRIME'

Steiber said there were three other people in the brand new Range Rover, which still sported paper dealer plates, at the time of the shooting but that none of them were facing charges. The sport utility vehicle was impounded earlier this week.

"The only shooter involved in this heinous crime was Mr. Harris," Steiber said.

One of those passengers has been identified as 22-year-old Yenesis Alfonzo, also known as Tineesha Howard, who was cleared as a "person of interest" in the case earlier on Thursday.

Police officials have said the shooting may have stemmed from a verbal altercation in the valet area of the Aria resort and Casino, a few blocks away on the Strip.

But Steiber said during the press conference that there was no apparent relationship between Harris and Cherry.

According to police, Harris has a long criminal history that includes arrests for robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping, pandering and soliciting prostitution. Police have said they believed he was involved in the sex trade.

"I hope anyone out there watching understands clearly that if you live in this city, if you work this city or if you visit this city and you act like this person we will find you, we will prosecute you and we will send you to prison," Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie said.

On the day of the shooting, Gillespie had publicly bristled at suggestions that the outburst of gun violence could call into question the safety of the Strip, a popular tourist destination that attracts millions of visitors each year.

Earlier this week, taxi companies pledged $35,000 toward a reward fund leading to the arrest and conviction of Harris. It was not immediately clear on Thursday if anyone would be eligible to claim that money.

Cherry's slaying took place less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. That crime remains unsolved.
