After two decades of satellite observations, an international team of experts brought together by ESA and NASA has produced the most accurate assessment of ice losses from Antarctica and Greenland to date. This study finds that the combined rate of ice sheet melting is increasing.

The new research shows that melting of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets has added 11.1 mm to global sea levels since 1992. This amounts to about 20% of all sea-level rise over the survey period.

About two thirds of the ice loss was from Greenland, and the remainder was from Antarctica.

Although the ice sheet losses fall within the range reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007, the spread of the estimate at that time was so broad that it was not clear whether Antarctica was growing or shrinking.

The new estimates are a vast improvement more than twice as accurate thanks to the inclusion of more satellite data, and confirm that both Antarctica and Greenland are losing ice.

The study also shows that the combined rate of ice sheet melting has increased over time and, altogether, Greenland and Antarctica are now losing more than three times as much ice, equivalent to 0.95 mm of sea-level rise per year, as they were in the 1990s, equivalent to 0.27 mm of sea level rise per year.

The 47 experts combined observations from 10 different satellite missions to reconcile the differences between dozens of earlier ice sheet studies and produce the first consistent measurement of polar ice sheet changes.

Earth observation satellites are key to monitoring the polar ice because they carry instruments that measure changes in the thickness of the ice sheets, fluctuations in the speed of the outlet glaciers and even small changes in Earth's gravity field caused by melting ice.

As outlined in the paper 'A Reconciled Estimate of Ice Sheet Mass Balance' published today in Science, the researchers carefully matched time periods and survey areas, and combined measurements from European, Canadian, American and Japanese satellites.

The measurement were acquired by instruments such as the radar altimeters and synthetic aperture radars flown on ESA's ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat missions from 1991.

"The success of this venture is due to the cooperation of the international scientific community, and to the provision of precise satellite sensors by our space agencies," said Professor Andrew Shepherd from the University of Leeds and one of the leaders of the study.

"Without these efforts, we would not be in a position to tell people with confidence how Earth's ice sheets have changed, and to end the uncertainty that has existed for many years."

The study also found variations in the pace of ice sheet change in Antarctica and Greenland.

"The rate of ice loss from Greenland has increased almost five-fold since the mid-1990s.

"In contrast, while the regional changes in Antarctic ice over time are sometimes quite striking, the overall balance has remained fairly constant at least within the certainty of the satellite measurements we have to hand," said co-leader of the study Dr Erik Ivins from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

###

The Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise is a collaboration between 47 researchers from 26 laboratories, supported by ESA and NASA.

Europe's Global Monitoring for Environment and Security programme will continue to monitor changes in the polar ice sheets during the coming decades, with the SAR and radar altimeter sensors on the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-3 satellite series, scheduled to be launched from 2013 onwards.

Wood Partners Begins Construction on Downtown Denver M-F ...

November 29, 2012

By Keith Loria, Contributing Writer

Wood Partners, East West Partners and USAA Real Estate have teamed to break ground on Alta City House, a five-story, 281-unit luxury apartment complex in Denver, Colo., that?s part of an ambitious urban redevelopment project.

?It?s an entire city block that we?ve purchased and access is pretty special,? Tim McEntee, Wood Partners? director, told Commercial Property Executive. ?There?s a bridge that crosses over from Riverfront Park into Union Station and drops into our site. Then, 100 feet from there is the light rail platform that has just been relocated there.?

Located at 1801 Chestnut St., Alta City House will be situated west of Denver?s iconic train station at 17th and Wynkoop streets in the heart of the bustling Union Station neighborhood.

?Alta City House is going up in one of the most exciting urban living-working-entertainment centers in the country,? McEntee said.??With over six modes of transportation?from light rail to bike paths?and access to three pro sports venues, 1,200 restaurants and bars, and one of the largest arts complexes in the nation, Alta City House could hardly be better positioned.?

Alta City House will be part of a 12-block redevelopment initiative, anchored by Union Station, an ultramodern transit hub, surrounded by public plazas and gardens, restaurants, and residential and retail space.

?It?s going to be a world-class urban development and it?s already half way there,? McEntee added. ?Right now you have four million-square-feet of new commercial right next to Union Station and more corporate users moving in. It was a long time coming and right now it?s one of the most dynamic spots in Denver.?

The five-story apartment building will offer 183 one-bedroom units, ranging from 645 to 825 square feet; 90 two-bedroom units, from 991 to 1,227 square feet; and eight three-bedroom, 1,300-square-foot units.

Amenities planned include a rooftop deck with a year-round outdoor kitchen, fireplace, and swimming pool, a dog wash, a two-story fitness center, two-story club room, cyber caf? and outdoor courtyards and a plaza opening to the 18th Street pedestrian bridge.

?The amenity package is probably one of the most impressive that we?ve developed in Denver so far,? McEntee concluded. ?It will have a roof deck, it overlooks Coors Field, it will have a fully-equipped bike shop and a climate-controlled wine cellar with lockers for residents to utilize.?

A Step-By-Step Way To Determine If Your Google Adwords is ...

If you are using Google Adwords to advertise your business, here is a step by step process to determine if you are making money? or losing it.

Online Advertising losing money resized 600Do you know if your online advertising (like Google Adwords) is making money? or losing money?

There is an easy way to find out.

Read below for a step by step procedure to figure out (to the penny) which online advertising sources are your best money making sources of traffic? and which ones are just costing you money.

Why you MUST figure out the profitability of your internet advertising sources

You absolutely, positively need to know which of your advertising sources are profitable sources of new business? and which aren?t.

Yes, you can just throw a $1,000 here and $1,000 there to advertise online in a variety of ways.? You can assume that if you spend money to advertise, that money will return ?with friends.?

But, honestly? why would you make that assumption?

In our experience, some sources for leads are better than others.? Some seem good but turn out to be money pits.? Others are like the bubbling artesian well of continuous profitable business.

Why not know which source is which?

Ok, my fussing is over.? Let?s get down to business.

How to figure out the profitability of your internet advertising-? step by step

Here is a basic, step by step method for any business to discover if their online advertising is making (or losing) them money.

This method works particularly well if you are using Google Adwords or some form of pay-per-click advertising.? But, you can also use it if you are doing search engine optimization (SEO).

Note:? I will go over these steps in detail in the video below.

1. Set up a special landing page where your online traffic is going.? Make sure you can control the traffic so that a particular traffic source is the only one going to that page.

2. Put a special ?tracking? phone number on that page, as well as a new/unique email address.? Then, when people contact you, will know they came from that page and source.

3. Compile a list of those who contacted you using that special phone number or email address.? A call tracking phone number can produce a report that show exactly who called that number, how long the call was, etc.? Then compare that list to your records to determine which inquiries bought what.

4. Calculate your gross profit generated by the tracked inquires, and compare that to the cost of acquiring those inquiries.

5. Determine your marketing ROI (return on your investment) to see if you are making or losing money (and how much).

Here is a video example from a real live business on how they tracked their income from their Adwords campaign.

If you are tracking your online income by source, what are the ROI levels you are seeing?? Leave a comment below to share with others on what they might expect.

How Pat Flynn Uses Podcasting to Build His Business - NYTimes.com

Pat Flynn lost his job as an architect in the fall of 2008. Four years later, Mr. Flynn, who is 29, has one of the top business podcasts on iTunes. It?s called the Smart Passive Income Podcast, and it offers information and advice about online marketing and sales strategies.

Introduced in July 2010, the podcast has been downloaded more than two million times and its listeners have given it more than 500 five-star ratings. Mr. Flynn consistently ranks in the top 10 business podcasts on iTunes, including, at one point, earning a second place spot behind The Dave Ramsey Show (iTunes doesn?t explain how it ranks podcasts).

There are far too many self-proclaimed gurus of online marketing, but Mr. Flynn seems to have figured out some things that could help just about any small business.

It was early in 2008, before he was laid off, that Mr. Flynn first experienced the power of the Internet. While studying for the LEED exam, which certifies knowledge of green building practices, he created a blog where he posted?charts, cheat sheets, and notes from reference guides. Months later, he found out that more than 10,000 people were visiting his site each day.

With that level of traffic, he decided to turn the blog into a business to help architects and other building industry professionals pass the exam. After adding more content to the Web site, he wrote and published an e-book study guide for the test and started selling it to his Web visitors. After 30 days, he had taken in $7,905.00, and he was starting to think? that getting laid off may have been the best thing that had ever happened to him. In his first year running his online business, he says he made $203,219.04 (as he reports? in his annual passive income report). ?I was amazed that a real business could be created by just providing helpful information,? he said.

And that inspired him to start a new Web site, called the Smart Passive Income Blog, in which he explained how he had built the business. ?It started out with me creating a site to tell people about how I made passive income with my LEED exam Web site,? he said, ?but then I started to explore other ways to make money online and share my experiences.?

For example, he built a niche Web site for the security-guard-training industry and wrote a 20-part series of blogs explaining how he did it. One of his lessons is that he gives his content away free and makes money by selling ads and training courses. When it comes to selling on the Internet, he said, ?the best sales pitch is no sales pitch at all.?

As his traffic grew, he decided to introduce a podcast to reach even more people. He had been listening to podcasts for more than three years. ?The idea of learning as you go really?intrigued?me,? he said, ?and so each week, in the car to and from work, at the gym, and even on train rides, I?d listen to 15 to 20 hours of audio, and I was always learning something new.?

In the summer of 2010, Mr. Flynn released the first session of The Smart Passive Income Podcast, as an extension of his then two-year-old blog, which, at that time, had about 7,500 subscribers. ?It?s a bit technical to set up a podcast,? he said. ?It involves first recording an episode, tagging it with the appropriate data ? such as show name, host, episode number, category, etc., uploading it onto a server and then publishing it onto a Web site and directing that feed to a particular directory or player. What?s nice is that once you set it up, all you have to worry about is creating new shows. The directories, such as iTunes, will update automatically when you publish a new episode.?

Anyone can post a podcast on iTunes, Mr. Flynn said, but it?s imperative that you stay focused on your audience. ?It all comes down to producing a high-quality podcast that provides some sort of value to its listeners, whether it?s entertainment value, education, whatever.? Not surprisingly, he has created a free podcasting tutorial, complete with six step-by-step training videos to help anyone get a podcast up and running.

Early on, he says, he spent about $400 on podcasting equipment, including a microphone, but beyond that he had everything else he needed. He uses Garageband software, which came with his iMac, to record his episodes. ?If you?re on a PC, you can download free audio-editing software called Audacity, which works just as well as Garageband,? he said.

Today, Mr. Flynn?s shows run between 45 minutes and an hour and are posted twice weekly. He introduces himself at the beginning and provides the show number. An announcer gives a short intro with music, and Mr. Flynn offers a brief summary of what he?s going to cover. His guests have included well-known entrepreneurs and bloggers.

To promote the podcast, Mr. Flynn has syndicated his show through Stitcher, a popular podcasting directory that is available primarily on mobile platforms.?But iTunes drives most of his traffic. ?Itunes is also a search engine,? he said, ?so if the title of your podcast, the description, and the title of the episodes are similar to what keywords people are typing into iTunes, you have a good chance of being found. You can easily find my podcast, for example, by typing in ?blogging? or ?online business? in the search field in iTunes.?

In part because Mr. Flynn often tells his podcast listeners to go to his blog for additional information, links or show notes, the blog now has more than 50,000 subscribers. The podcast has helped build? an audience for Smart Passive Income videos, an e-newsletter and an e-book.

?I just enjoyed the process and made sure that I put a lot of care into every single minute of my podcast,? he said. ?They say that time flies when you?re having fun, well, results happen much faster when you?re having fun, too.?
