Ken Kwapis Plans The Care and Feeding of Exotic Pets | Shock Till ...

Ken Kwapis, who most recently directed the whale-centric The Big Miracle, is taking a more dangerous look at animals with The Care and Feeding of Exotic Pets, based on the forthcoming novel by Diana Wagman, says Deadline.

The story goes like this: ?Winnie Parker, mother to an angst-ridden teenage daughter and ex-wife to a successful game show host who left her for a twenty-something contestant, begins a normal day in her hum-drum existence by dropping her car off at the repair shop. After accepting what she believes is a ride to pick up her rental car, Winnie realizes too late that she's been kidnapped. What follows is a riveting psychological game of cat and mouse set in the kidnapper's tropically heated house -- kept that way for Cookie, a menacing seven-foot long Iguana headquartered in the kitchen.?

Falcons (4-0) shock Panthers with late rally

Bryant kicks game-winning FG after Ryan, White hook up on 59-yard bomb

By PAUL NEWBERRY

updated 6:44 p.m. ET Sept. 30, 2012

ATLANTA - Matt Ryan took an awful beating.

Another win for the Atlanta Falcons will make the pain a lot easier to take.

Shaking off a career-high seven sacks, Ryan completed a 59-yard pass to Roddy White with about a minute remaining, setting up Matt Bryant's 40-yard field goal that kept the Falcons perfect on the season with a wild 30-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

After squandering a 24-14 lead in the second half, the Falcons (4-0) needed a crucial fumble by Cam Newton to even have a chance - and they still faced long odds when the Panthers downed a punt at the Atlanta 1 with 1:09 remaining.

Ryan had no timeouts and surely some doubt about how much time his beleaguered offensive line would give him. But he dropped back about as far as he could, threw it about as far as he could, and relied on White to go up and make the catch.

He did, between two defenders.

Bryant's kick won it with 5 seconds remaining.

"We made the plays when we needed to," said Ryan, who passed for 369 yards and three touchdowns. "That's what you need to do week to week in this league."

The Falcons (4-0) are off to their best start since 2004, when they reached the NFC championship game.

This was their stiffest challenge yet.

"That was exciting. Whew!" said coach Mike Smith, finally able to exhale. "Every time it looked bleak, every time it looked like we didn't have a chance, we were able to overcome it."

Newton threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he let the ball slip away when it looked as though he had clinched the victory for the Panthers (1-3).

"You have to protect the football," Newton said. "That was a key focus going into this game, and I fumbled. There's a lot of guys that are trusting the ball carrier, and I was the ball carrier that particular play to get the job done. And I dropped the ball."

On third-and-2 at the Atlanta 46, Newton took the snap and bulled his way over the left side, his body surging across the spot needed for the first down. On the sideline, several of the Panthers broke into a celebration.

But John Abraham knocked it loose, the ball squirting backward. Fullback Mike Tolbert covered it for Carolina at the 45 - 1 yard shy of a first down. After attempting unsuccessfully to draw the Falcons offside, the Panthers punted it away.

Ryan and White took advantage of another chance.

"I threw it high and far to the spot we talk about," Ryan said. "Roddy went up and made a great catch. When you're in that situation late in the game, that's what you have to do."

White was sandwiched between cornerback Josh Norman and safety Haruki Nakamura, but managed to leap over both of them to bring down the pass at the Carolina 40. A pass interference call and two short completions made things easier for Bryant, who had already connected from 41 and 33 yards to improve to 8 for 8 on the season.

Make it 9 for 9.

The kick was straight down the middle.

With Julio Jones hindered by an injured right hand, White came up with a huge game for the Falcons. He had eight catches for 169 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. But his biggest catch was the final one.

"Matt told me he was going to throw it up there. Just make a play," White said. "Not for one second did we think we were going to lose the game."

Ryan credited his offensive line on the final drive, even though they struggled most of the day to keep him upright against Charles Johnson and the rest of the Panthers defense.

Johnson spent so much time in the backfield he should've worn an Atlanta jersey, finishing with 3 1/2 sacks. Ryan was hit nine times after throwing and hurried on eight other attempts.

"The offensive line did a great job," Ryan said, all evidence to the contrary. "If you're going to throw the football that far down the field, you need some time. The guys did a great job of pass protection, giving us time to throw it down there."

Newton's fumble ruined what had been a stellar performance. He threw for 215 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Greg Olsen early in the game, then a 36-yard scoring play to Kealoha Pilares that put the Panthers ahead 28-24 with 7:55 remaining.

Newton also ran for 86 yards on nine carries, bulling his way into the end zone from 4 yards late in the third quarter.

The Panthers played much better than they did in their last outing, a 36-7 home loss to the New York Giants, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from sliding a daunting three games behind Atlanta in the NFC South.

"I want to apologize to my teammates and the fans that were watching out there," Newton said. "Everybody was doing their job. I clearly had the first down, but I've just got to hold onto the football."

Ryan also connected on a 60-yard touchdown with Michael Turner, who took a screen pass right about the line of scrimmage and zigzagged down the field for the first scoring reception of his nine-year career.

DeAngelo Williams scored Carolina's other TD on a 13-yard run.

Notes: The Falcons failed to score a TD on their opening possession for the first time this season, going three-and-out. Also, it was the first time the Panthers did not allow a touchdown on their opponent's opening drive. ... Nakamura had an early interception, but it was largely a day to forget for the Carolina free safety. He was beaten on both of White's touchdown receptions, missed a tackle on Turner's scoring play and had the ball snatched away by White on the long pass that set up the winning field goal. ... Atlanta's only other 4-0 start came in 1986.

United set to unleash Rooney, Van Persie on Cluj

LONDON (AP) -Six weeks into the season, it may finally be time for Manchester United to unleash the mouth-watering strike partnership of Wayne Rooney and offseason signing Robin van Persie for the first time.

With Rooney fit after a month out with a gashed leg, United manager Alex Ferguson has the luxury of partnering his top two strikers for Wednesday's Champions League match at Cluj.

"Probably the strongest part of the club will be in the striker department," said Ferguson, who also has England international Danny Welbeck and Mexico forward Javier Hernandez as options up front. "It (Van Persie's arrival from Arsenal) should give everyone a push."

Not only might the Romanian outsiders have to deal with two of the world's best strikers in tandem, they also have to face the wrath of a team desperate to make amends from a sloppy 3-2 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday.

That 3-2 defeat showed that while United may have one of the most devastating strike-forces in Europe, its defense is suspect with captain and defensive lynchpin Nemanja Vidic out for two months with a knee injury.

"We have to be positive," United defender Patrice Evra said. "I hope it was just an accident (against Tottenham) and we can get back the winning mentality in the Champions League."

Galatasaray hosts Braga in Group H's other match, two teams who lost their opening matches.

United beat Galatasaray 1-0 at Old Trafford despite the Turkish team nearly springing an upset after going close on a number of occasions and having good penalty appeals turned down.

Braga slumped to a 2-0 loss at home to Cluj, which had a shock win over Roma in the Champions League in 2008, giving the team confidence it can reproduce those exploits against United.

With United far from convincing this season, it could happen.

Losing Vidic for a lengthy spell has hit Ferguson hard - with England defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also sidelined with injury, the United manager has just two fit central defenders in Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans. Both of those players have only just returned from injury and Evans was seen limping off the field after the Tottenham game.

And with Ferguson still unsure of his best goalkeeper out of Anders Lindegaard and David de Gea, there is uncertainty throughout the English side's defense.

"The amazing thing about being at United is there's no difference between, say, playing Crawley at home in the FA Cup or Liverpool away in the league," said Lindegaard, insisting United will not underestimate Cluj. "We take the same approach every time and that is to work in the professional manner that has made the club into what it is today.

"We played in Romania last season (beating Otelul Galati) and we hope for a similar result there on Tuesday. We have to go out there and win again."

Midfielders Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were all missing from the 21-man squad that flew to Romania on Monday, while right winger Antonio Valencia still hasn't recovered from an ankle injury.

"The next two Champions League games are big ones for us," said Rooney, who was part of a United squad that failed to reach the knockout stage last season. "We are looking to get maximum points.

"The Champions League is completely different to the Premier League. If you are not at your best, you get punished, which is what happened to us last season. We have to make sure that won't happen again this year."

Report: Half of US adults own tablet or smartphone

5 hrs.

Americans' news habits are on the move.

Half of all adult Americans now own either a tablet computer or a smartphone, and one-third use their mobile devices to view news stories and video clips at least once a week.

That's according to a survey by the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, which polled more than 9,500 adults from late June to early August.

The findings have "major implications for how news will be consumed and paid for," says Pew. About 20 percent of the mobile news users surveyed said they paid for an online subscription in the last year.

But mobile viewing doesn't necessarily mean that people are cutting back on viewing news on PCs or in newspapers. About half of the tablet news users that Pew surveyed say their tablets spur them to spend more time consuming news, and about one-third say they get news from new sources they didn't use before. Nearly one-third of the mobile users also have print-only subscriptions, and most have no plans to give them up.

Devices based on Google's Android platform are gaining momentum. Pew found that just over half of tablet owners reported owning Apple's iPad, compared with 81 percent a year ago. Forty-eight percent now own an Android-based device, including Amazon.com's Kindle Fire.

Chile's Pinera presents education-heavy 2013 budget bill

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chilean President Sebastian Pinera unveiled an education-heavy 2013 budget bill on Sunday, as he seeks to improve the right's social credentials before municipal elections in October and next year's presidential election.

The budget bill proposes increasing public spending by roughly 5 percent next year, Finance Minister Felipe Larrain said as he submitted the proposal to Congress. The measure would bring total spending to around $63 billion, a record high.

Pinera is under pressure to increase spending after more than a year of massive marches over what protesters charge is a stratified and costly education system.

"Our citizens are rightly every day more conscious of their rights and demand solutions to their problems," Pinera, who cannot run for consecutive terms, said in a national address.

"But we can't fall for the populist cries ... Amid this world in crisis, the Chilean economy is healthy, continues to grow and generate jobs and opportunities. We have to keep advancing."

Chile, the world's largest copper producer, is seen growing around 4.7 percent this year, boosted by its lynchpin mining industry, robust domestic demand and its forestry, salmon and wine exports.

While the Andean country has long been held up as an economic model in Latin America, it has the highest income inequality among OECD countries and the rate has barely fallen since 1990, according to a report by the body last year.

Billionaire Pinera is Chile's most unpopular leader since General Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship ended in 1990, although polls also show the center-left opposition bloc, the Concertacion, as unpopular.

Pinera's Economy, Public Works and Defense ministers are seen as potential presidential candidates in next year's presidential race. The left is pinning its hopes on a comeback by popular former president Michelle Bachelet, who has not said whether she will run.

The 2013 budget puts education spending at a record-high $12.8 billion, Pinera said. But the move is set to fall short in the eyes of many student groups, which are seeking a massive revamp of the system including free schooling for all.

"The president insists in maintaining the fallacy that parents have the right to choose (in terms of education). The ones who choose in Chile are only the ones who have money," student leader Gabriel Boric said on Twitter after the speech.

Pinera also said the bill puts a special emphasis on combating crime and drug trafficking. Congress has 60 days to approve or reject the bill.

At least 20 injured in California train crash

Map locates Amtrak derailment in Hanford California.

HANFORD, Calif. (AP) ? Two cars and the locomotive of an Amtrak train carrying about 169 passengers derailed Monday after colliding with a big rig truck in California's Central Valley, authorities said.

At least 20 passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, authorities said.

The crash occurred when the driver of the big rig carrying cotton trash failed to yield and hit the train, authorities said. The impact pushed the two passenger cars and the locomotive off the tracks south of Hanford, a farming town.

The train traveled about 600 feet after the collision before hitting a switchback and derailing, according to California Patrol Officer Scott Harris.

The crash occurred at a crossing that was equipped with control gates, Putnam said.

After the crash, metal pieces from the truck could be seen inside the train, which was covered by cotton seeds. Several pieces of luggage were also scattered about.

The injuries to passengers were described as bumps, bruises, scrapes and possibly broken bones by Kings County Assistant Sheriff Dave Putnam.

Eight of the injured passengers were taken to Adventist Medical Center in Hanford and five more were enroute, said hospital spokeswoman Christine Pickering. She did not provide details on the extent of their injuries.

"We did call in additional physicians and staff," Pickering said.

Four additional injured passengers were taken to nearby Adventist Medical Center in Selma.

The train was on its way from Oakland to Bakersfield, according to Amtrak. It had four rail cars and a locomotive.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Jerry Pierce. The CHP will investigate the crash.

"This is a big, huge chaotic scene with lots of agencies involved," Pierce said.

Pierce said the other passengers have been taken to an auditorium in Hanford, where they will board a train and continue to their destinations or family members will pick them up.
